I
went to Austria just after graduating from Rochester
Institute of Technology in 1986 and was thrust into
the position of team captain from day one. Putting
aside the challenges of the sport itself, I was asked
to lead a team of players, very few of whom spoke
English. My German was rickety at best at this time
which made for some innovative communication techniques.
Through my experience in Austria, I developed leadership
techniques and motivational skills that stay with
me to this day.
On
the business front, I have been the owner/operator
of a retail food and catering business for eleven
years. More recently, while continuing my involvement
in the food business, I developed a company called
Image Cycling (www.imagecycling.com). Image Cycling
offers a unique motivational indoor cycling experience
that blends high tech imagery with music and motivational
coaching; many of our classes are held under the dome
of the Vanderbilt Planetarium in New York.
Mountain
climbing also has been a passion of mine for many
years, and it has afforded me an opportunity to see
some truly amazing parts of the world and to experience
many wonders in my life-including, for example, being
able to experience the sun rise as I glimpsed at both
the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at one time (summit
of Mount Chirripo in Costa Rica); I was amazed to
be able to see the actual curvature of the Earth while
standing on the top of Mount Kilimanjro. Mountain
climbing also has, at times, challenged me to address
and work through physical and mental barriers that
I thought I could not overcome.
I
have been able to blend my love of mountains and nature
with my coaching practice. Each year I organize a
week-long team building trip to a wonderful destination.
On the last trip I led to Costa Rica, the participants
ranged in age from 30 to 75. We hiked, did zip lining,
sunset cruising and animal watching, among other things.
It was a life changing experience for many of the
participants. Click
